First Lady Michelle Obama Headlines Partnership for a Healthier America 2014 Summit

Partnership_Healthier_America_Michelle_Obama...06It was a poignant two days at the the 2014 Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) Summit in Washington, DC as Michelle Obama took center stage to address attendees and media on solutions for eating healthier and exercising daily. Her pivotal focus was on families cooking at home more often than not. This concerted effort will control what we put in our bodies and keep out what we shouldn’t be ingesting. Essentially, we all need to get back to the basics of eating which includes added fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins. In fact, the food served at the luncheon consisted of fruit salads, veggie medleys, quinoa salads and low-fat wraps. PHA works with the private sector and its honorary chair First Lady Michelle Obama to end the nation’s childhood obesity crisis.

The 2014 PHA Summit theme was “Building a Healthier Future,” directed towards the premiere gathering of leaders working to end childhood obesity. It provided a unique opportunity for business and industry leaders to sit with their nonprofit, academic and government counterparts and address this paramount issue. The Summit is always about action, not talk. It’s about bringing leaders together in ways that create new opportunities and walking away with tangible, actionable solutions that will help to make the healthy choice the easy choice. More importantly, organizations such as FirstBIKE, Knowledge Universe, Nutri Ventures, Sodexo and four hospital systems announced new directives aimed at ending the epidemic.  “We are so pleased about the commitments announced today and the difference that these companies will make in the health of children for years to come,” said PHA CEO Lawrence A. Soler. “Our new partners are putting a stake in the ground to provide healthier options and lifestyles for millions of Americans – nationally and locally. We are proud to have them join us in the fight against childhood obesity.”  Specifically, FirstBIKE is donating an annual minimum of 1,300 PHA-branded bikes to the YMCA and other youth organizations over the next three years.

Imagine a room full of suits performing dips and jumping jacks. It was amazing! The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) is devoted to their mission. In 2010, PHA was created in conjunction with – but independent from – First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! effort. PHA is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that is led by some of the nation’s most respected health and childhood obesity experts. PHA brings together public, private and nonprofit leaders to broker meaningful commitments and develop strategies to end childhood obesity. Most important, PHA ensures that commitments made are commitments kept by working with unbiased third parties to monitor and publicly report on the progress their partners are making.
