Fox 5 Fitness for the Family: Fit Fathers & Kids Being Fit for a Healthier Generation

Fit_Kids_Fit_Families...014It was a beautiful and energetic morning in Washington, D.C. for a cadre of dads and their beautiful and active kids. Why? Because Fox 5 invited Fit Fathers and Kids Being Fit in studio for a poignant news segment discussing family fitness and nutrition in support of Global Youth Service Day in partnership with The Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

Fit Fathers’ Kimatni D. Rawlins spoke about the need for parents to become more focused on foods that heal and provide energy for children and to say no to foods of mass destruction such as sodas, fast food, and processed meals. Good eating in combination with active living is a precursor for long-term, positive health. As expected, Rawlins demonstrated a micro Social Workout with Fox 5 anchor Wisdom Martin and the gang of kids and parents that were invited including Kyle Aye, Leon Brittain, Cody Evans and Phil Lozano. The kids were super-excited and enthusiastic all morning long.

As part of Global Youth Service Day kids from Bowie, Maryland and surrounding areas are invited to join a “for kids by kids” events better known as the 2nd Annual Fun Run and Walk for Kids to combat and raise awareness of childhood obesity which is currently sitting at epidemic levels. In fact, 1 in 3 kids are already overweight or obese. Jodi Evans, a 10-year-old Bowie resident, is organizing the event to inspire her peers to get moving and have fun at the same time since many kids need to find entertaining and simple ways to obtain more physical activity. Jodi and her company, Kids Being Fit, received a grant from the City of Bowie’s Community Outreach Committee to make this all possible. Approximately 75 kids attended the first Fun Run & Walk for Kids and this year they are expecting a few hundred participants. “I created the idea because I like to play outside and thought creating an event is a great way to get active,” said Jodi Evans.

All youths between 5-16 years-old are invited to join the free event Saturday April 12th  at Bowie High from 9 am to 12 pm. It will feature a 2-mile run, fitness exercises, an obstacle course, jump rope and hula hooping competitions. Please register at www.KidsBeingFit.com.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation, works to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and to empower kids to develop lifelong, healthy habits. The Alliance works with schools, companies, community organizations, healthcare professionals and families to transform the conditions and systems that lead to healthier children.
