Run Santa Monica!

kimatni_rawlins_nike_just_do_it

Before the anticipated unveil of the new, family oriented 2018 VW Midsize SUV in Southern California tonight I went out to run some errands (literally) around Santa Monica for 5 miles. From dropping off a heavy package 1 mile away at the post office, to picking up my vegan dinner at Veggie Grille, to taking in the excitement of the Santa Monica Pier and Muscle Beach, I had a very energetic and fitness focused afternoon. Work pays the bills but positive health habits extends life. There should never be an excuse for actively enhancing your overall health.

I Run to Stay Young

Kimatni_Rawlins

I woke up before the sun’s eyes

so I can watch the sun rise,

and run 10 miles in the sun’s shine.

Galloping like a finely fed steed,

I’m fueled only by grass and seeds —

never dairy or meats.

Everyday I strengthen my frame

with endurance and fitness regimens that maintain and enhance my health.

For, it’s not science,

this is a lifestyle of nutritional wealth!

Healthy Vibes at California Roots Festival

We needed to hear more of the band Slightly Stoopid after their Cali Roots set on the opening evening so we ran 8 Monterey coastal miles to the vibes of “2Am” on repeat. The Fit Fathers team is now feeling refreshed, energized and recharged for today’s roots rock performances by Tarrus Riley, Stephen Marley and Damian Marley. Yes, it’s a movement!

Vacation_Fitness_Fit_Fathers_Kimatni_Rawlins...13“Oh no, you don’t supposed to be exercising in the gym during island vacations,”said the beach bum heckler. “Ha, you must not know the Fit Fathers sacred life enhancement code,” we replied. Eat clean, keep active and continuously energize your life. So scat while we build muscle from fat!

Vacation Fitness in Aruba

As we always say, “vacations are to relax the mind, not the body.” So the first morning of an Aruban getaway we hit the pavement to run free for 4 miles through the hustle and bustle of the Dutch island’s Capital city of Oranjestad. Furthermore, each ¼-mile the team knocked out 25 push ups and 25 dips for a total of 400 each in addition to hopping over a segment featuring 200 meters of cement barriers. Ye, it felt amazing as usual. Swiftly afterwards we were able to reward ourselves with a big fat vegan grub and sunbathing on Palm Beach. Remember, “No Excuses!” is a Fit Fathers mantra.

Fit Fathers Joins the 10th Annual URBANATHLON in San Francisco

“It was an unbelievable experience that challenged my body and mind,” stated my childhood friend Steve Redmond who was participating in the 10th Annual URBANATHLON for the first time. His goal for signing up was to gain a greater perspective on what it takes to accomplish a daring feat consisting of an 11.2-mile run and up to 19 energizing obstacles. It was fun and epic as we conquered the course at AT&T Park like men in battle. Hosted by legendary ultra-marathoner Dean Karnazes, registrants couldn’t have asked for a better day of weather and superb running conditions.

The URBANATHLON by Men’s Health Magazine is the very race that led me to a lifestyle change over 6 years ago. Then, it was held in Chicago which allowed me to run the stadium stairs in Soldier Field. I’ve been a Walter Payton since a kid so the destination selection was simple. Since Steve already lives in San Francisco the 10th Annual was a no-brainer. Plus we both wanted to test ourselves on the steep, hilly streets. Training was simple but once you hit the pavement the real world race became intense. That first hill for example drained me but I refused to walk until I crossed that finish line.

Steve — a Fit Father of a young daughter — took the URBANATHLON serious with months of nutritional and fitness preparation. In fact, the man celebrated a wedding, a birthday and a race all within a 10-day period. Certainly November 2015 will be one of his most memorable. additionally, his new wife was ultra supportive on race day as she consistently kept popping out of nowhere snapping pictures and cheering us on. I thought she was driving and parking, but come to find out she also knocked out a few hundred calories and 10K steps walking and running vigorously to intercept us. “I’ve always suspected my husband might be a super hero. But when I saw him jump a school bus and fly thru the finish line I knew superman had nothing on him,” said Jenn Redmond. Yes, we did have to climb over a bus as well as dive over cabs and the final hurdle, that damn 8-footwall before receiving our medals.

For 2016 the plan is to recruit several Fit Fathers and Mommy Fit relay teams to compete against one other in the New York event. In totality URBANATHLON may seem daunting, but 11 miles and a cadre of obstacles is easy work when you cherish the body, mind and spirit as the temple it is. I had a blast and continue to highlight all the fabulous moments from the race and the euphoria produced after each task was completed. Memories include bouldering up Telegraph Hill, stutter-stepping through tires, climbing over-under traffic barricades, ascending over marine hurdles along the Embarcadero, traversing monkey bars in the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf, battling the AT&T Park stair climb, and of course completing the aforementioned pre-finish line obstructions. Steve presumed the monkey bars would be an issue but had no qualms since he enhanced his pull-up game during training.

Afterwards, bananas, Six Star Pro Nutrition bars and Propel Electrolyte Water were available for replenishing the system. However, I enjoyed my vegan breakfast from Herbivore – The Earthly Grill on Valencia Street. Steve said he just ate the best pancakes ever until Jenn reminded him of her special home cooking. Soon after she rushed me to SFO to catch my United flight back home in Maryland after a two-week stay in California. Luckily I was upgraded to First Class because my legs were now as loose as noodles!

Stretch, Breathe, Live and Run the Golden Gate Bridge

Run-The-Golden-Gate-Bridge-Fit-Fathers...10

Experienced by Kimatni D. Rawlins

The Fit Fathers team has visited the Bay Area at least 40 times in the last two decades but never have we thought about running or biking across the historic Golden Gate Bridge. Completed in 1937, the famous spectacle draws droves of daily crowds from across the country and globe. So enough was enough, we manifested our intentions and made it happen for two reasons. One was to kick off training for the Urbanathlon presented by Men’s Health Magazine and the second was to scratch off another monument from our global running chart.

Run-The-Golden-Gate-Bridge-Fit-Fathers...17Since the team’s latest journey situated us at the luxurious Cavallo Point Lodge in Sausalito, CA, it was almost a no-brainer for exercising our rights to fitness freedom by way of the Golden Gate Bridge. Founded on a former military base, the eclectic property is less than a mile away from the entrance of the bridge. In total we ran around 6 miles in a bit more than 60 minutes. The toughest task was trekking the half-mile, up-hill trail to get to the Vista Point. After that it was smooth sailing across the bridge and back, and down the trail. Though, a few flights of steps stood in our way in route to the spacious Cavallo Point studio rooms.

We’re feeling amazing and now ready for a healthy, vegan meal at the Cavallo Point Cooking School in building 602.
