The New Diamondback Podium

When Diamondback set out to design the new Podium the goal was simple: make the best road bike possible. They set aside any preconceived ideas and investigated every potential increase in performance, allowing results to speak for themselves. The results? Well, that’s easy as the bike delivers speed, performance, and outstanding ride quality.

Three things set this Podium apart from any bike that came before it: its design process, influences, and construction.

After the rousing success of the Serios TT bike, they collaborated once again with the guru of very fast carbon fiber bicycles, Kevin Quan. With Quan on the design team, Diamondback was able to dramatically improve the Podium’s ride, weight, and aerodynamics. Being able to borrow from the Serios paid off—you can see some of the same lines in the Podium’s truncated airfoils and tube shapes. Hours in the wind tunnel produced a Podium that’s 50% faster than its predecessor. This decrease in drag has the effect of saving a rider approximately 100g over any previous Podium – that’s up to ten watts – across all yaw angles. To boil it down, this bike cuts through the air like few road bikes ever have.

Being good in a sterile wind tunnel is one thing but the real question to ask of a bike is, “how does it ride out in the real world?” They also enlisted the help of Team Optum pro riders for this step. They put prototypes through their paces and gave Diamond tons of feedback along the way. Their input was invaluable: these are guys who are accustomed to long and difficult days in the saddle and are very in-tune with their machines. These cyclists demand a bike that’s compliant to ride all day yet can react instantly to accelerations and attacks. When the dust settled, this bike does that and more–Optum’s already grabbing wins on the bike.
