June Is Men’s Health Month—Get Involved

Did you know there was a month entirely dedicated to raising awareness for issues impacting the health and wellness of men and boys?

The month also coincides with Men’s Health Week (June 10-16), a special awareness period created by Congress, and the #ShowUsYourBlue campaign on June 14 where men and women are encouraged to wear blue to work that day to show their support for the health and well-being of men boys and men.

See our easy list of things to do to be active, aware, all month long.
1. June is Men’s Health Month – spread the word and make sure every loved male in your life is living well

2. Early screenings! They will not only save money in the long run but also save your life and/or make life easier to manage if diseases are caught early on

3. Exercise, its summertime! Why do you think most TV shows and football are off? So men can finally go out and move around. (Note: there is no true correlation between summer broadcast schedule and reason to exercise) You shouldn’t need a reason to get at least 30 minutes of exercising in, just help your heart and just do it like Nike says.

4. Father’s Day is coming up! Why not give your father figure in your life the gift of knowledge along with your gift. There are many resources at www.menshealthnetwork.net that help educate you and your father about risks of prostate cancer and other diseases that may be prevalent to you.

5. Keep reading this blog and others like it for the latest on how to improve and support men’s health. (Hopefully starting with this June, we will have regular pieces weekly for you)

6. Remember that anyone can assist in the men’s health movement, and help is not limited by gender basis. Anyone can be supportive and help men make that first step towards a better life. Everyone should be an ally!

The Ethiopian Experience: Trekking the Highlands of Lalibela

Selam, and welcome to “the origin,” the African nation that has never been colonized by Europeans. Lookup “The Battle of Adwa” where King Menelik II defeated the Italians in an epic sequence of historical consequence. Finally, after years of research, readings, teachings, and listening to roots reggae rhythms epitomizing The Promised Land, I took the requisite steps needed for a transformative Ethiopian experience as part of my Annual Nomadic Journey in Addis Ababa and Lalibela.

I ventured to Ethiopia for its strength, Abyssinian culture, veggie injera meals, traditional Eskista shoulder dance up close, and to breathe with deep spirit from the highlands of Lalibela. I began the excursion upon landing into Addis Ababa, the capital and largest city of Ethiopia. I enjoyed many of the historical sites, including the National Museum of Ethiopia, Ethiopian National Theatre, Ethnological Museum, the Red Terror Martyr’s Museum, and Menelik Palace in the Entoto Hills. The Historic Kidist Selassie Cathedral is the highest-ranking Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in the city. Sarcastically, I was also looking for freedom fighting singer Teddy Afro, the Bob Marley of Ethiopia. Listen to any of his classics, and you will become an instant devotee. Trust me!

I’m alarmed by negative statistics and equally saddened by the 50,000 average lives this disease accounts for annually. Thankfully, positive health means prevention over resistance so I decided to schedule a colonoscopy on my 45th birthday and reward myself with a better piece of mind knowing I am doing everything possible to live a longer and more fulfilling life. Let’s face it, most kids don’t love their veggies. When my kids first started eating solid food, I always offered a wide variety of vegetables, which they usually gobbled up! But as they grew and started developing a taste for other things, it got more challenging. The good news with kids is that they need a lot of calories to meet the demand of their rapidly growing bodies. But with that said, you still don’t want to be feeding them fat, sugar, and refined foods all day.

Travel Fitness in Music City!

I know I know, people visiting Nashville — whether it’s business or pleasure — may not have fitness engagement at the top of their list when there are numerous Honkey Tonks to visit along with the boatload of historic sites and museums. Yet, I always say there are no excuses when it comes to treating your body like a temple!

So fortunately for locals and visitors Nashville is ripe with fitness activities such as running areas like the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge that spans the Cumberland River. Since I Always pack running shoes on business trips I popped up early and jogged from my downtown hotel to Nissan Stadium located on the east bank of the river. The roundtrip exercise was around four miles and gave me enough time to prepare for business meetings. On day two I was pleased to discover CYCLEBAR (The Gulch) which was close to where I was staying. The 7:30am class was packed and the vibe was energetic. I was feeling so refreshed afterwards. Trust me, there is no better way to start your day like an hour of cardio or HIIT.

Of course Nashville is also bustling with hip vegan restaurants so replenishing with organic vegan fuel was not a problem. Positive vibrations, happy people and various channels to release energy created a great equation for my health enhancement. I look forward to a return to Music City!
