The Ethiopian Experience: Trekking the Highlands of Lalibela

Experienced by Kimatni D. Rawlins

Selam, and welcome to “the origin,” the African nation that has never been colonized by Europeans. Look up The Battle of Adwa where King Menelik II defeated the Italians in an epic sequence of historical consequence. So finally, after years of research, readings, teachings and listening to roots reggae rhythms epitomizing The Promised Land, I finally took the requisite steps needed for a transformative Ethiopian experience as part of my 6th Annual Nomadic Journey in Addis Ababa and Lalibela.

I ventured to Ethiopia for its strength, Abyssinian culture, veggie injera meals, traditional Eskista shoulder dance up close and to breathe with deep spirit from the highlands of Lalibela. I began the excursion upon landing into Addis Ababa, the capital and largest city of Ethiopia, while enjoying many of the historic sites including the National Museum of Ethiopia, Ethiopian National Theatre, Ethnological Museum, the Red Terror Martyr’s Museum, Menelik Palace in the Entoto Hills and the Historic Kidist Selassie Cathedral which is the highest-ranking Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in the city. Sarcastically, I was also also looking for freedom fighting singer Teddy Afro, the Bob Marley of Ethiopia. Listen to any one of his classics and you will be become an instant devotee. Trust me! Vegan In Vegas: Joyful Eating at VegeNation

Vegan_in_Vegas_VegeNation..09

Experienced by Kimatni D. Rawlins

Wow. What an amazing culinary experience I had at VegeNation in downtown Las Vegas. The address is 616 Carson Ave, #120 Las Vegas, NV 89101 to be exact. The Jackfruit Tacos aka East West Taco were super amazing and the Quinoa Spaghetti (Mama Mia) brought back memories of mama’s meatballs. I even purchased a VegeNation t-shirt as a reminder to return as soon as possible.

Also on deck were Hot Tamales, Wok’ed Veggies, Bao Wow (with Asian BBQ tofu, shitake mushrooms and spinach) and a brownie with coconut ice cream on top. It was my anniversary weekend so Misa and I deserved it. The cafe styled vegan eatery also serves breakfast. Prices are very fare but expect to dish out $27 for a cab ride from the strip. But more importantly the music created a melodious vibe. When Robert “Nesta” Marley came on I knew this spot would become a permanent marker on the revisit list. Not all of Vegas is sinful!

Sun Essential

IMG_9282Sun is Shining — Bob “Nesta” Marley

Life can be convoluted if you allow “attachments” and “wants” to obstruct your path. Life in actuality is “simplistic” when satisfaction is manifested from the essentials such as happiness, purity and love. I am appeased by the energy of the morning sun, the vibrations of the ocean, the hugs from my family and the nourishment from foods that grow from plants, trees and seeds. Today will be another glorious day. One Love!

Marley Museum: Welcome To Jamrock

1 Bob_Marley..10One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain. — Bob Marley’s Trench Town Rock

Damon “Jr. Gong” Marley’s reggae anthem Welcome to Jamrock never felt so poignant than during the weekend I finally visited the Kingston (Jamrock) epicenter after two decades of travel to the most heartfelt place on Earth I have visited to date — Jamaica. In fact, Jr. Gong recorded the track at his father’s 56 Hope Road studio using the same audio console “Tuff Gong” mixed on in the 70s. More importantly, 56 Hope Road has become the Bob Marley Museum and offers tours to Robert “Nesta” Marley fans, pupils and faithful followers from around the globe. Your reverence for Bob Marley will be rewarded with timeless symbolism, musical artifacts and comprehensive knowledge of his career through the words of a tour guide. [Read more…]

Reggae Heat Wave: Jamaica’s Sumfest Concerts in Montego Bay

Jamiaca_2013_Reggae_Sumfest_Half_Moon....08“Come back to Jamaica” is not just a branded slogan for the indigenous and cultural island, it’s a welcoming message of freedom, exploration, and methodical stress release from the hectic demands of metropolitan life and exaggerated work hours required from corporate America. My soul yearns for life-everlasting tranquility, my body craves warmth and clear waters, and my heart desires the palpable rhythms and spiritual lyrics of Reggae music. For this very reason I try to rendezvous to the island of “One Love, One Heart” as often as possible, especially when Reggae Sumfest is in town. [Read more…]
