Five Tips for Continued Health in 2015

LetsMove

Check out the ideas from Let’s Move  to help your family have a happy and healthy 2015!

1)  Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. By following MyPlate and making each meal half fruits and vegetables, you can help to ensure you are getting nutrients needed to lead a healthy lifestyle. Look for fruits and vegetables that are red, orange and dark green – they are full of vitamins and minerals.

2)  Cook more meals at home. You can start with cooking just one more meal each week. The key is to prepare in advance and check out resources like the MyPlate board on Pinterest to find new recipe ideas that are both delicious and good for you. Cooking at home lets you control portion sizes and sodium levels and often leads to healthier meals.

3)  Drink more water. You are what you drink, and when you drink water, you Drink Up. Keep a reusable bottle filled with water with you throughout the day as a reminder and an easy way to stay hydrated. To mix it up, try adding fresh fruit, like oranges or lemons, to your water for fun and a little flavor.

4)  Try new activities. Discover new things you and your family can do to be active and have fun. Get creative and find activities that require little or no equipment so you aren’t limited by what you have or don’t have. Make being activity a priority by setting aside time for new activities and invite other families or friends to join when possible as a way to spend time together while also being active.

5)  Make healthy changes together as a family. Involve everyone in coming up with new meal and activity ideas so each family member feels invested in the effort. Encourage your kids to get involved in preparing family meals and leading new games and activities.

What a fascinating escape to Virginia Beach during Labor Day weekend to participate in the Mazda sponsored Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach ½ Marathon with a few other Fit Fathers such as company founder Kimatni Rawlins and Delaunta Cameron, both also former Georgia Tech football players. Like a band off brothers we decided to join Team Mazda and train jointly for three months with the culmination being a splash in the Atlantic Ocean after crossing the finish line. [Read more…]

Girls Soccer vs Candy Crush

Yes, practice does make perfect and involving your kids in the build process creates a greater sense of appreciation and pride. Now instead of Candy Crush on iPads they’ll be occupied with balls in nets and hoops .#FitFathers

Family & Friends Social Workout

Group_Fitness_The_Social_Workout....014What do you do when family comes in town? Well, we certainly hope you do not sit around eating cake all day. How about fruit smoothies and “social workouts” at the local high school field along with a few friends and their families? That’s exactly what we did this weekend. Sprints, football drills, stadium stairs, hill work and more was the formula for the 75-minute metabolic workout with every man, woman and child that participated. Everyone is feeling refreshed and energized we’re told!

So please continue to encourage your loved ones and close buddies to join you for a fun and exciting workout with the kids. Then refresh with your favorite fruit smoothie such as the Tango Mango featuring apple juice, mangos, berries, bananas and flaxseeds.

7 Family Fitness Ideas for Winter

winterfamilyexercise1-600-x-403I recently visited the lively Laguna Beach, Calif., with friends and family to enjoy a few last moments of fun in the sun before Christmas. Imagine an 80-degree December day where the locals hit the beach, trails, ocean or gym for continual physical fitness sessions.

Well, back home in the nation’s capital the vantage point is a bit skewed from visions of sun-kissed California. Here, a normal December day is symptomatic of 20-degree weather and wintry driving conditions. Winter in Washington, D.C., also means a few snow days when the kids beg to build a snowman based on the Olaf character from Disney’s “Frozen.” Their snowy activity is a great idea. [Read more…]
